Vote Against House Bill 274: Your Rights Will be Taken Right Out from Under You!

Vote Against House Bill 274!

ACTION ALERT!!!!!!!

We are now at the time when things in the Legislature can change quickly and rumors abound. Here's what we know for sure now.
House Bill 274, the omnibus tort bill that passed the House, was referred to the Senate State Affairs Committee last night and, although it has not yet been officially posted, we expect it to be heard at next week's regularly scheduled meeting of the State Affairs Committee on Monday, May 16.
TTLA MEMBERS: WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW
CONTACT YOUR SENATOR
  • Call your State Senator’s Austin office and ask him or her to oppose HB 274. Make the point that the bill will result in small businesses and Texas families with valid claims losing their access to the justice system. A TTLA analysis of HB 274 as it passed the House is attached for your reference.
INVOLVING YOUR CLIENTS
  • Special interests backed by insurance companies and corporate interests are working to further restrict the legal rights of Texas families this session. We need you to contact your clients, staff, friends and colleagues and encourage them to speak out in defense of legal accountability and participate in Texas Watch’s campaign to make sure the Texas Legislature hears their voice. A sample email and letter are attached.
SPECIFIC ISSUE REQUEST
  • The TTLA Legislative Team needs stories from clients who have been hurt or injured and the defendant designates a responsible third party that is either bankrupt or is the client’s employer that is covered by workers compensation. Please contact Rick Plezia, Chair of the TTLA Committee on Legislation, at 512-476-3852.
SUPPORT TTLA
  • Contribute to the Legislative War Chest. The TTLA Board unanimously voted that the legislative fight should be supported by the entire organization and every member should be called upon to make a contribution to fund our legislative efforts. Many have already paid their contribution in full and we need you to join in this effort. Please make your voluntary contribution today. If you need additional information, contact Tiffany McGee at 512-476-3852 or tmcgee@ttla.com.
