As Irene hits N.C., governor pleads, 'Please stay inside' – USATODAY.com

As Irene hits N.C., governor pleads, 'Please stay inside' – USATODAY.com

An emergency vehicle patrols the boardwalk in Ocean City, Md., early Saturday.Federal officials warned Saturday that even though Irene is weakening to a category 1 hurricane, the storm is still dangerous and residents need to heed warnings.
"I would not advise people to focus on category 1, 2 or three," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano during a morning press conference. "Irene remains a large and dangerous storm. People need to be prepared."

The storm made landfall at 7:30 a.m. ET. Wind and rain knocked out power to nearly 200,000 customers along the North Carolina coast, North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said. Napolitano said "We expect significant power outage up and down the Eastern Seaboard."
At least two piers on the Outer Banks were wiped out, the roof of a car dealership was ripped away and a hospital in Morehead City was running on generators.

"Our plan is executed now, our shelters are open, our search and rescue teams are all over the state," Perdue said at a news briefing.

About 8,000 people already have checked in to 81 shelters. Thirty emergency teams are stationed around the state along with 285 members of the National Guard.
Flash flooding already is a problem and some areas have gotten up to 8 inches of rain the governor said. In a plea to residents Perdue said bluntly: "Please stay inside."

Perdue said there were still some people who opted to stay behind but "the good news is our tourists evacuated very quickly."

She said the storm may not be nearly as bad as anybody predicted, but "get ready, she's still a hurricane and people need to respect her."

"There's nothing you can do now but wait. You can hear the wind and it's scary," said Leon Reasor, who rode out the storm in the Outer Banks town of Buxton. "Things are banging against the house. I hope it doesn't get worse, but I know it will. I just hate hurricanes."

More than 2 million people along the East Coast have been warned, or ordered, to flee the storm's path. Millions more as far north as Maine hunkered down for a weekend of historic wind and rain.
The storm was forecast to reach the mid-Atlantic states later Saturday and New York and New England on Sunday. A hurricane threat this severe is new territory for some northern areas.
"I'm from Atlanta. I spent 10 weeks in Mississippi after Katrina and four weeks in Miami after Andrew," said Teresa Caver, a Red Cross official in Binghamton, N.Y. "I was not expecting to come to New York and have to deal with hurricanes or earthquakes."

The storm already was having an effect north of Cape Lookout in Virginia Beach, where driving winds and high winds were battering the city.

Powerful winds wobbled stop signs, shook light poles and bent trees. As a group of workers at a Hampton Inn stood chatting under the portico, a loud crack, like a thunderbolt, made everyone jump: It was the 10-foot-high plastic sign at the Grand Ocean Hotel across the street, which had been sucked off the face of the building and fallen eight stories to the street.

Rain was falling horizontally. About the only people venturing onto the beach were rain-soaked news crews shooting footage of crashing waves for top-of-the-hour newscasts.
Local officials said about 300 people already were settling in at five shelters around town, but that no major injuries or emergencies had been reported.

"Actually our calls for service are down," said Tim Riley, a battalion chief with the Virginia Beach Fire Department. "We think people are heeding our call to shelter in place."
Hours before the storm was to hit in earnest, about 4,000 homes had already lost electricity, according to Dominion Virginia Power.

U.S. airlines have canceled thousands of weekend flights. Dozens of airports, including New York's three major ones, were closing or curtaling schedules.

Local Red Cross chapters have put volunteers on alert to be ready to travel to the Carolinas or other East Coast locations to help deal with the aftermath of the hurricane.

"I have been sending out alerts to our volunteers in the entire region, putting them on standby that Irene is heading this way. History has showed us that our effect has always been flooding," said Sharon Aswad, chief program and response officer for the American Red Cross South Central New York region.
Many governors have ordered mandatory evacuations, making it clear that those who stay behind will have to fend for themselves.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie urged 1 million Jersey Shore vacationers and residents to leave: "I saw news feeds of people on the beach in Asbury Park… Get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park and get out.. You've maximized your tan. Get off the beach, get in your cars and get out of those areas…. Do not waste any more time working on your tan. Get off the beach.''

Even President Obama, who cut short his vacation in Martha's Vineyard on Friday, said the storm was shaping up as a "historic hurricane" and urged residents to "be prepared for the worst."
"Don't wait. Don't delay," Obama said. "We all hope for the best, but we have to be prepared for the worst."
Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Saturday urged residents who
needed to leave to get out - right away.
The city does not have enough resources to evacuate the majority of the 370,000 affected residents after the weather worsens, he said. The bridges, streets and subways of New York were nearly empty ahead of a nearly unprecedented mass transit shutdown.

"Staying behind is dangerous, staying behind is foolish, and it's against the law, and we urge everyone in the evacuation zones not to wait until gale-force winds," he said at a news conference from Coney Island. "The time to leave is right now."

First televised Major League baseball game - This Day in History!

On this day in 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast on station W2XBS, the station that was to become WNBC-TV. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York.

At the time, television was still in its infancy. Regular programming did not yet exist, and very few people owned television sets--there were only about 400 in the New York area. Not until 1946 did regular network broadcasting catch on in the United States, and only in the mid-1950s did television sets become more common in the American household.

In 1939, the World's Fair--which was being held in New York--became the catalyst for the historic broadcast. The television was one of fair’s prize exhibits, and organizers believed that the Dodgers-Reds doubleheader on August 26 was the perfect event to showcase America's grasp on the new technology.
By today's standards, the video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles: The first was placed down the third base line to pick up infield throws to first, and the second was placed high above home plate to get an extensive view of the field. It was also difficult to capture fast-moving plays: Swinging bats looked like paper fans, and the ball was all but invisible during pitches and hits.
Nevertheless, the experiment was a success, driving interest in the development of television technology, particularly for sporting events. Though baseball owners were initially concerned that televising baseball would sap actual attendance, they soon warmed to the idea, and the possibilities for revenue generation that came with increased exposure of the game, including the sale of rights to air certain teams or games and television advertising.

Today, televised sports is a multi-billion dollar industry, with technology that gives viewers an astounding amount of visual and audio detail. Cameras are now so precise that they can capture the way a ball changes shape when struck by a bat, and athletes are wired to pick up field-level and sideline conversation.

Are You a Sexual Harrasser?

Sexual harassment is a complex and, unfortunately, pervasive phenomenon that spans all human cultures and classes. Psychologists tell us that not all sexual harassers fit the same mold, however.
As it turns out, there are about a dozen different, unique ways to sexually harass someone—everything from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s infamous coke can pube to the construction workers who whistle as a woman walks by.
In fact, it’s possible to sexually harass someone without even being aware of it. You might even think that if it’s that subtle, who cares? The problem is that you are making another person extremely uncomfortable and potentially causing psychological trauma. Here are the major categories of sexual harassment—do you fall into any of these?

Quid Pro Quo Harassment
Quid pro quo harassment is probably what most people think of when they imagine sexual harassment. These are the guys (although women in high positions increasingly do it, too) who have power and dispense benefits in exchange for sexual favors. Bosses, teachers, and Hollywood casting agents are most often thought of in this category of sleaze.

Mentor Harassment
Often a precursor of quid pro quo, a mentor-style harasser is a teacher, leader, clergyman, or boss who makes his victim feel as if they have a special relationship, when actually his intentions are sexual. This harasser type is especially creepy because of the level of trust involved. Similar to the mentor is the “confidante” harasser, who creates and emotional bond with a subordinate by sharing stories and becoming a friend for the purpose of later intimacy.

The Joker
The joker is the guy who makes lewd comments or jokes “all in fun,” as an act of bravado, competition, or because he thinks it’s cute. This kind of harassment is common in group situations and may involve a number of people in a kind of gang mentality—the kind of harassment you see in fraternity houses, for example. What jokers don’t realize is that, rather than coming off as jovial, fun-loving guys, they actually make themselves look like epic skeezes, and leave their targets feeling self-conscious at best, and psychologically scarred at worst.

The Toucher
Also known as “the groper,” the toucher will hug or touch you whenever the opportunity arises, but not just because he’s affectionate. This is the guy who “accidentally” brushes your tush while passing behind you, gives unwanted shoulder massages, or insists on bear hugs, during which he disgustingly rubs his body against yours. Touchers are extremely psychologically damaging to their victims and should probably have their nasty, roaming hands whacked off as a matter of course.

The Bully
The bully is the kind of guy whose ego is so fragile, he must punish his victims for their perceived slights by sexually harassing them. This is the guy who has a psychological need to prove he’s more powerful than a woman and can do whatever he likes to her, including subjecting her to humiliating and degrading sexual insults. A woman who has resisted the advances of a guy and then had him turn on her and call her a whore was dealing with this type of jerk.

The Gallant
Similar to the joker, this type of harassment is verbal, but while the joker may use insults, the gallant is under the impression he is being complimentary by whistling, praising a person’s appearance or making gender-specific comments. Although flirting can include these types of comments, what makes the gallant a harasser is the fact that his input is not welcome by the recipient.
Contrary to what some men seem to think, “Hey baby, nice rack,” makes most women feel vulnerable, preyed upon, and degraded. Even being told you have pretty hair can be gross if the person doesn’t have an intimate relationship to you, such as your boyfriend or hairdresser.

All the Other Jerks
Other harasser categories include the intellectual seducer (similar to the mentor, but usually a college professor type), the incompetent (a socially inept guy who doesn’t know how else to speak to a woman), the pest (who can’t take no for answer), and the situational harasser (who is triggered by an event like divorce and deals with it psychologically by harassing others). There is even a category for those who sexually harass unintentionally—many men really don’t understand the dozens of little ways women may be repressed, exploited, or subtly victimized every single day and therefore are unaware that they are causing harm with their “innocent” sexual comments.

The next time you’re about to openly leer at someone or make a double entendre, give some thought to how you could be taking a little slice out of the recipient’s psychological well-being. The person may not show it—women especially are so bombarded with this kind of behavior that most have learned to just let it slide—but more often than not, it is damaging. Even if the damage is small, it adds up. Do you really want to be that person? Yeah, we didn’t think so.

Back to School Basics...Help Your Kids Wake Up Fresher and Easier!

Back to School Basics....

The Absolute, Easiest Way Ever to Help Our Children Have a Successful Start to The School Day
We know the drill, we begin about a week before school starts sending our children to bed earlier and rousing them earlier in the morning, trying to re-set that summer-time body clock. What if I gave you 7 simple steps to make mornings easy regardless of the time of year, type of child, or age of  child? Plus, (added bonus), your morning becomes easier too.

Think About the Natural World and How our Bodies Were Designed
First, we just need to admit that our bodies are not designed for much of our modern world. If you and your family enjoy spending time outdoors and even camping, you are probably familiar with going to sleep earlier in the evening, listening to frogs, crickets, owls, perhaps a creek nearby, and waking with the sun, birds and crisp, morning air. Your body may be a little stiff, but you feel awake and alive. Living indoors, we often push our bodies to stay awake longer through the use of artificial lighting, we fall asleep to the sound of dishwashers, dryers or even TV’s and we wake to the blare of alarm clocks or music and bright lights. Often we awake less than refreshed.

Engage your child’s Brain.
Our brains receive information through our 7 (yes, it’s 7 now) senses. It all begins with the brain. In nature, it’s the early bird chirping we hear, followed by the dim light of the sun that initiates the shift from sleep to arousal. Helping our children wake easily doesn’t require engaging all 7 senses. Some will be more effective than others for your child. Try a few. Try them all. See which techniques work best for your children. Then, mix them up a little bit. The brain requires novelty to become alert.

About 15 minutes before you want your child to wake:

1. Sight: Try to keep curtains and blinds open in your child’s bedroom while they are sleeping. The gradual brightening (from the sun) of the room will do some of the work for you. Next, turn on a hall light rather than a lamp or ceiling light in their bedroom.

2. Sound: Our brains process sound even while we sleep. This is why we wake when we hear our children crying. Play music in a central room such as a living room or a den. It doesn’t have to be loud. For morning, I prefer classical music. It doesn’t have lyrics so it doesn’t interfere with any conversation we may have. Additionally, composers such as Mozart and Bach were paid by to create music that engaged and alerted the brain thereby keeping parishioners awake during long sermons. I’ve found it highly effective for improving the morning routine and for use during homework time. You and your children may prefer other genres and I encourage you to try different types of music. Again, novelty will be important throughout the year.

3. Smell: Even if you don’t have time to cook a full breakfast, there are numerous quick breakfast foods that will engage our brains through the sense of smell. Frozen biscuits: You just pop these in the oven and twenty minutes later, you have perfect biscuits and house full of the wonderful aroma of baking bread. Coffee: Even if only for adults, it’s an aroma we associate with mornings and breakfast. Fruit: Some families offer small dishes of sliced fresh fruit to their children before breakfast is ready. The smell and crisp taste has an immediate alerting effect on the brain.

4. Temperature: A warm washcloth handed to a child while they are still in bed for washing their face seems to do the trick faster than anything else. I don’t suggest using cold water. The goal here is to help children wake easily, the make the morning routine flow smoothly and to send them off to school ready to learn. The goal isn’t to jolt them awake. Save the cold water for their teenage years.

5. Touch: A gentle back rub or, combined with the warm washcloth above, the washcloth applied to the face stimulates the skin and awakens the brain. Changing from pajamas to school clothes. In the winter, clothes freshly pulled from the dryer maintain their heat for a little while. I’ve seen children quickly jump from a warm toasty bed and into warm toasty clothes without a complaint.

6. Vestibular: The sense of balance. After you’ve applied the above techniques, most children are well on their way to a pleasant morning experience. But they may still be in bed. Pretending to roll them out of bed engages their vestibular system and sense of balance. This is usually where much children are ready to move on out of bed, drop off the washcloth in the bathroom or laundry room and head to the kitchen for a hot biscuit.

7. Proprioception: The sense of motion. Getting them moving. Being silly and rolling out of bed. Dancing to the music playing in the den. Engaging in some family exercises. A body in motion stays in motion.
Bonus section: As adults, the number one reason for difficulty sleeping is a brain that is engaged in thought. Usually we wake in the middle of the night and, if we don’t return to sleep quickly, our brains begin to think about all the things we need to do the next day as well as all the things we forgot to do the previous day. Once our brains are engaged in thinking, there is no returning to sleep. We can use the same technique to our advantage with our children.

Riddles and Jokes: Keep a book of simple riddles or jokes handy and ask your child to solve the riddle or guess the joke. They don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, the simpler they are, the sillier and the better the morning.

Math problems: From simple to complex. Even answering “what’s 14 times 5?” is enough to engage more adult names.

Ask about activities or events that your child is eagerly anticipating.
Ask your child to recall pleasant events that happened in the past.

I hope these suggestions help make your mornings easier for years to come. I’ve even found them helpful with teenagers and adults. Again the key is novelty and gentleness. The goal is an easy, pleasant morning experience that your children will remember fondly for the rest of their lives.

Top 10 Companies Hiring This Week!

companies hiring nowAugust 21 - August 27

We know that your job search can get quite frustrating these days with more people trying to find a job and fewer employment opportunities available.
To ease the burden, we've tracked down 10 top companies that are hiring this week -- from sales jobs to finance jobs, full-time jobs to part-time jobs. We hope you find a job that's perfect for you.
Good luck job hunting!

1. Citi

With the world's largest financial services network, Citigroup, Inc., spans 140 countries and employs roughly 260,000 worldwide. After suffering from massive losses during the financial crisis of 2008, the company fell from the esteemed title of "largest bank in the world by assets." They are, however, still one of the "big four" banks in the United States. Citigroup repaid the emergency government aid in full by the end of 2010.
As stock prices plunged recently, banks were at the forefront of the slide. Citigroup was a part of this fall, yet CEO Vikram Pandit claims Citi is still secure and in good shape as a company.
Employee Review: "Nice coworkers, good hours, pleasant management, good location, interesting work spanning decades of involvement in the country, good springboard for future jobs."*

2. Sunrise Senior Living

First opened in 1981, Sunrise now offers assisted living facilities for seniors in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. They serve nearly 40,000 residents in total and offer a range of services, from assisted living to rehabilitative services.
The company has ranked repeatedly on the Fortune 1000 list, starting in 2005. Washingtonian magazine has also named Sunrise Senior Living as a "Great Place to Work" three times thus far.
Employee Review: "The best part of working at Sunrise is working with the residents, and having great team members around you. Your work feels very rewarding because you are making a difference in people's lives."*
Top Job Categories:

3. Bridgestone

The company is headquartered in Tokyo and, with all its subsidiaries included, employs over 150,000 worldwide. In 1906, Bridgestone founder Shojiro Ishibashi took over his family's clothing business at 17 years of age.
He revolutionized the traditional Japanese socks known as "tabi" with the creation of a rubber-soled version that could be used as work shoes. It was this same tabi-sock division of his company that produced the first Bridgestone tire in April of 1930.
In 1988 the company purchased the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, solidifying Bridgestone's position as a major player in the worldwide tire market. Since then, the company has continued to grow and currently has manufacturing centers in 25 countries.
In May, the company was recognized as one of Boeing's Suppliers of the Year. The airline manufacturer works with around 17,500 suppliers, and Bridgestone was among 15 companies honored (in various categories) for their service to the company.
Employee Review: "As industry leader, Bridgestone is a global brand with great quality tires. The products are recognized world over and customer recognizes the quality."*

4. Spirit Halloween Superstores

Located at shopping malls nationwide for seemingly few months at a time, Spirit Halloween Superstores are operated as temporary storefronts before and during the Halloween season. The company is owned by Spencer Gifts, a popular novelty retail chain.
Though Spencer's has come under fire for allegedly allowing young children access to adult toys in their stores, the Spirit stores are operated independently and have received positive reactions. Some California stores also donated nearly $30,000 to the U.C. Davis Child Life Program last season as a way of giving back to the local community.
Employee Review: "This was a great seasonal job. The DSM was wonderful to work with and the organization was very good. I would highly recommend this job to anyone looking for seasonal work."*

5. Dollar General

Founded in 1939, the Dollar General corporation operates over 9,300 stores across the United States. Typically located in smaller strip malls or shopping plazas, the stores sell both name-brand and off-brand goods at bottom-dollar prices. The stores typically operate in locales where larger chains, such as Wal-Mart, do not serve the market.
